Challah Trays & Covers

Traditional meals held on the Jewish Sabbath day, or Shabbat, begin with the blessing of wine and and a special bread. The blessed bread is called Challah (KHä'LA), and represents the manna that divinely appeared amongst the dew every morning which fed the Israelites following their Exodus from Egypt. The challah bread is prepared using quite a few eggs, flower, sesame or poppy seeds, and molasses or honey (optional). Two loaves are interwoven to form one large loaf of Challah, which is then smoothed over with an egg yoke coating to add a golden shine to the bread. Upon removing the loaves from the oven, the challah is placed on a traditional challah tray and protected with a challah cover. It is common practice to start Friday's evening meal and the two meals eaten on Shabbat with a blessing over two challah loaves and kiddush (a blessing recited over wine). Variations of challah can be served kosher as well, such as flat challah bread, muffin shaped challah, and ball shaped challah bread.

The challah is served on a Challah Tray, blanketed with a Challah cover, and cut with a distinguished Challah Knife. In accordance to the Jewish concept of Huddur Mitzvah, beauty is an important aspect in keeping the Shabbat. Accordingly, Challah Trays, Challah Covers, and Challah Knives are designed with elegant style and grace. The presence of these items lend an aura of significant presence, which is what Shabbat is about - We must always remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

Crafted with distinct features that often embed timeless Judaica symbols in their patterns, the Challah Cover, Tray, and Knife can tell an entire story on just one item. The Challah accessories which Judaica Gifts carry are handmade and many are hand painted. We carry a large selection of high quality Jewish Gifts that can be treasured and passed on for generations. Challah Trays, Challah Covers, and Challah Knives are gifts that can be used over and over on Shabbat and other Jewish Holidays for years to come.
